Georgia O'Keefe
2nd edition (1978) copy of Georgia O'Keefe by Georgia O'Keefe
Long recognized as a major figure in American art, Georgia O'Keeffe has had a number of retrospective exhibitions at leading American museums, each one a major event. Yet no full-color collection of her work has been available until now.
This comprehensive volume consists of 108 color plates accompanied by text written by the artist. While insisting that "shapes and colors are more exact to me than words," Georgia O'Keeffe writes in prose as clear and spare as the paintings themselves about her work and her evolution as a painter, because "no one else can know how my paintings happen." The paintings, which she herself has selected, include many never previously reproduced and a number that have never been publicly shown.
The reproductions and text cover the entire range of her astonishing career, in which she has moved from intense, personal abstraction to pictorial equivalents of her experience with nature -flowers, bones, rocks, landscapes- and back again to new forms of abstraction. The unusually large format permits reproductions that approximate more closely the quality of her work. The book's layout and design reflect the artist's immaculate attention to detail and her close collaboration with the publisher.
