Second edition (1979) copy of Diamonds by Eric Bruton F.G.A

This completely revised and up-dated edition of Diamonds is concerned with the gem diamond world, the myths and superstitions, the rumbustious history of the struggle for claims and power, the unique properties that nave made these tiny stones the most valuable and portable form of wealth that exists, and the fascinating inside workings of the diamond market.

Prospecting and mining methods of the past and present are presented in an easy-to-understand way. There is an explanation o low rough diamonds are sorted for quality and valued, as well as practical instruction on grading polished diamonds for color, clarity, and cut, before valuing them.

A history of cuts includes the evolution of the brilliant cut, and also the development of cutting and polishing. The techniques of cutting and polishing diamond are described in some detail, for the first time in a book. The methods were trade secrets for centuries. This second edition also explains the new techniques of automatic polishing.
There are chapters on the geology of diamond occurrences and, for the reader seeking deeper knowledge, a detailed exposition of the unique physical properties of diamond, how diamond is made synthetically-even in gem qualities-and how it can be colored artificially.

A full chapter on the identification of diamond also describes the stones and simulants that might be mistaken for it. A new chapter details the largest and most famous diamonds of the world. Appendices list the world's largest rough diamonds and the world's largest polished ones, and show the shapes of all the major pipe mines.
No other book like this exists, despite the world-wide interest in diamonds, as it includes much material not previously published. Although it delves quite deeply into some aspects of diamonds, it is written in a simple and straightforward style and assumes no specialized knowledge on the part of the reader.
